The Importance of a First Look Before Your Wedding Ceremony

One fascinating thing that comes with being a wedding photographer is witnessing so many different traditions. While some couples opt for more modern approaches, others stick with time-honored customs. Every relationship is different, and that's one thing I love most about my job - every photoshoot is unique.

One tradition I've seen become increasingly popular in recent years is the 'first look.' If this is the first time you have heard of this and haven’t considered getting some wedding first look pictures - read on to find out why this beautiful tradition might be perfect for you.

What is a First Look?

A first look is a chance for the couple to see each other before the wedding ceremony starts. They are often dressed in their wedding attire, creating a sweet memory you should consider adding to your wedding photography timeline. An emotional wedding first look allows for a few private moments between the couple before their big day begins.

With just the loved-up couple and their photographer capturing the moment, it can be an incredibly intimate and special experience that you will remember forever.

What Is the Importance of a Wedding First Look?

There are many reasons a couple may want to have a first look on their big day. Each couple will have their own motives, but as an idea, here are some popular ones:

To Reduce Nerves

Let's face it - weddings can be pretty nerve-wracking! If you're the type of person who gets anxious about big events, a first look might be perfect for you. Seeing your partner before the ceremony can help calm your nerves and allow you to enjoy a worry-free wedding ceremony.

Not only this, but having a bridal detail checklist (which includes an emotional wedding first look!) can also help everything run smoothly on the day. This allows you to relax and savor every moment.

Get Emotional First Look Pictures

Capturing the love and emotion between a couple on their wedding day is one of the most important jobs for a photographer. It is these kinds of moments that create the best wedding photos. While there are plenty of opportunities to get some lovely shots during the ceremony and reception, a first look allows us to capture that raw emotion in a more intimate setting.

The results provide some truly stunning yet sentimental wedding first look pictures. But, a first look doesn't have to be between the couple. Capturing some delightful moments, like a first look wedding with dad or grandparents, creates memories to cherish forever.

Allows You to Savor the Moment

Your wedding day is going to be a whirlwind, and it can be hard to find time to truly savor the moment. Seeing each other before the ceremony gives you a chance to do just that. You can take a few deep breaths, relish in the fact that you're getting married, and enjoy each other's company before the big day begins.

Wedding First Look - Do Whatever Feels Right for You

It’s your wedding, and you should do whatever feels right. If you're not sure a first look is for you, then have a chat with your photographer. They can offer guidance and advice and help you make the best decision for your big day.

If you're interested in the concept and want some wedding first look ideas, then here are some you can use:

  • Wedding first look with the couple: This is the most popular first look. It is an incredibly emotional moment that makes for some beautiful wedding first look pictures.

  • First look wedding with dad and/or mom: The first look with your parents is a lovely way to capture some sentimental moments.

  • First look with bridesmaids/groomsmen: This is an excellent option if you want to include your wedding party in your first look.

  • First look with children: If you have children, then the first look with them can be an adorable moment. They will often get just as emotional as you!

Final Thoughts on The Importance of a First Look before Your Wedding Ceremony

So, there you have it - everything you need to know about having a wedding first look. Emotional, beautiful, and special, it is something to consider for your big day. Whether you opt for a first look wedding with dad or some other wedding first look ideas - I would love to capture the moment for you.

If you're looking for a wedding photographer based in San Francisco who can take some emotional wedding first look photos, please get in touch. I would be more than happy to discuss your wedding day with you!

Photographer San Francisco: 3 Hidden Gem Photography Locations

Steeped in history, San Francisco is a photographer's dream city. From the wondrous Golden Gate Bridge, the mysterious Alcatraz, and the colorful streets of Haight-Ashbury, there's something unique around every corner. And while these places are worth capturing on camera, they're also some of the more popular tourist spots in the city.

Redfin reached out to some local experts, including myself, to highlight our favorite hidden SF gems. Their list includes some of the city's best-kept secrets, from breathtaking gardens to delectable restaurants. There is something for everyone to enjoy in Redfin's list of hidden gems San Francisco, which makes it the best guide for exploring the area like a local.

As a professional photographer, I often find myself drawn to places that offer unique photo opportunities. I shared my favorite photography hidden gem San Francisco with Redfin, and I'm excited to share this location and more with you here.

1. Marshall's Beach: A Hidden Gem in San Francisco

San Francisco is a city rich with history, and that's evident the minute you set foot in Marshall's Beach. The beach is located north of Baker Beach and offers stunning panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands. This hidden SF gem is one of the few remaining natural landscapes in San Francisco, and it's a photographer's paradise.

You can find secluded coastlines and dramatic cliffs at Marshall's beach, making it an excellent spot for landscape photography. As you have to trek down the cliffs to reach the beach, you don't have to worry about dealing with crowds when trying to get that perfect shot.

If you're looking to add Marshall's Beach to your photographer San Francisco itinerary, the best time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun is low in the sky. This will help you capture the stunning golden hour light for which this beach is known. When I shot Ashley and Arnulfo's stunning maternity photoshoot at Marshall's beach, the lighting was absolutely magical.

2. The Palace of Fine Arts: A San Francisco Photography Hotspot

The Palace of Fine Arts is one of the most popular wedding photography locations in San Francisco, but it's also a great spot for engagement shoots - exactly what Brenda and Dave opted for! This hidden gem in San Francisco is a beautiful oasis in the middle of the city, and it's perfect for couples looking for a romantic setting for their photos.

The Palace of Fine Arts was constructed in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and it's the only surviving structure from the event. A lagoon surrounds the palace, and the tranquil gardens make a fantastic backdrop for any photo shoot.

3. Lands End and Legion of Honor: A Majestic Hidden Gem San Francisco

Lands End and the Legion of Honor are two gems in San Francisco that tourists often overlook. Lands End is a rural park that offers stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and it's the perfect spot for a picnic or a hike. The Legion of Honor is a nearby museum that is definitely worth a visit, and it's surrounded by gorgeous gardens that just call to be photographed.

I took Miss Natalie's senior portrait session at both these locations, and the juxtaposition of both sites played well into my vision for her photos. I loved capturing the grandeur of the Legion of Honor, then we walked over to Lands End, and I was able to shoot some more intimate portraits surrounded by natural beauty.

Hi! My Name is Christian — A Photographer in San Francisco. San Francisco offers endless opportunities for photo shoots, and I'm always discovering new and hidden gems. As a photographer, I feel fortunate to work in such a beautiful city. If you're looking for inspiration for your next photoshoot, I hope you'll consider any hidden gem San Francisco from either Redfins list or mine. If you're looking for a photographer to capture your next adventure in San Francisco, I would love to chat. Please reach out here so we can get you booked in!

Willow Heights Mansion Wedding // Marlene & Jun Golden Wedding

As a photographer, I have had the opportunity to capture many special events. I rarely get the chance to document a 50th wedding anniversary - the milestone of a lifetime for a married couple. When Marlene and Jun reached out to me, I felt honored that they trusted me with such an important task.

The couple planned everything incredibly well, from the wedding photography timeline to the beautiful Willow Heights Mansion Leal Vineyards wedding venue. The stunning Morgan Hill location offers everything you could want for a 50th wedding vow renewal - gorgeous European-inspired architecture, a private lawn, and incredible vineyard views.

The photos I captured of this early morning ceremony will be a lasting reminder of the special moments Marlene and Jun shared that day.

Marlene and Jun: Love, Laughter, and a Lifetime of Memories

When I finally met Marlene and Jun in person, their kindness and warmth made me feel so welcome. I could easily tell they were still head-over-heels in love, just like when they first married 50 years ago.

The couple met on the 8th of December, 1970, at the University of Santo Thomas Hospital Fair in the Philippines. After that, the world was colorized for them. Marlene and Jun say that it is their love and faith in God that has kept them together all these years.

They are a very grateful couple, and even through times of struggle, they have come out the other side with both each other and their faith. Marlene and Jun are perfect examples of resilience, faith, and love. So it was only fitting they held their 50th golden wedding celebration at somewhere as magnificent as Willow Heights Mansion.

Surrounded by their friends and family, some of whom had traveled from the Philippines, Marlene and Jun celebrated their love at a beautiful Leal Vineyards wedding ceremony.

A Celebration to Remember at Willow Heights Mansion

Nestled in the rolling hills, this Leal Vineyards wedding venue is the perfect backdrop for your wedding vows. It is a magical setting, full of classical elegance, thanks to the crystal chandeliers, extensive veranda, and marble details.

The ceremony was held on the manicured lawn centerpiece, with vows exchanged surrounded by wonderful views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The professional Leal Vineyards wedding coordinators were on hand to ensure everything ran smoothly, and the couple's families enjoyed watching them reaffirm their commitment to each other.

Willow Heights Mansion offers year-round availability and a capacity for up to 300 guests. Whether you're looking for a small, intimate gathering or a full-on wedding extravaganza, Willow Heights Mansion can provide the perfect setting. Once the ceremony is complete, you can then opt for an outdoor dinner on the terrace or head inside to the luxe event space.

Photographing couples at such stunning locations only strengthens my love for wedding photography! For more beautiful wedding photos with breathtaking backdrops - check out these weddings at The Secret Gardens and The Ranch at Silver Creek.

Thank you so much to the Reynoso family for trusting me to capture such a momentous occasion. Your love and commitment are truly inspiring! Congratulations, Marlene and Jun - may you have many more years of love and laughter.

What to Wear to Your Photography Session

If you have booked a photography session, it is only natural to wonder what you should wear on the photoshoot day. Often, we get confused about what will look on us and what will make the portrait look good. If you have the same thoughts in your mind, this post is curated to help you. Here you will find some helpful tips that I always tell my clients. I hope these tips will help you prepare for your photography session.

Your outfit can make or break the mood of the final photograph, and fortunately, it is something you can control quite easily. I have compiled a list of dos and don’ts that you can refer to while putting together outfits for you and your family. Arranging your outfits according to this guide will ensure a flattering look for you and also provide you with photographs that you can treasure forever.

Nothing Can Go Wrong with White

If you are confused about which color to choose for your outfit, simply go with white. Wearing a white dress or a shirt can create a flattering look against the backdrop and make you look vivid in the photographs. It reflects light to your face and automatically enlivens the image. White outfits can create a wonderful equilibrium in the photographs and can prevent distractions.

If you are looking for family photo ideas for 5 family members, you can wear combinations of white, different shades of blue, coral, and beige to create soothing yet vibrant visual imagery. Choose the beach or woods for a family portrait backdrop, and you will get a set of wall-worthy photographs. And, if you are confused about the location, just browse “Outdoor family photoshoot near me”, and the internet will provide you will hundreds of beautiful locations in your vicinity.

The Fabric is Important Too

The fabric quality of your outfit can be very evident in the photographs. Thus, paying attention to the fabric you choose for your photography session is crucial. High-quality natural fabrics look better than cheaper synthetic materials in photographs.

Though nowadays there are various affordable cloth brands to choose from, I recommend you pick your outfit for the photoshoot from an ethical company that uses natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or silk.

If you are taking family portraits, mixing fabrics of different textures between family members can also make your photographs visually interesting.

Choose Light Pastel Shades

Color theory is a very interesting subject, something that has fascinated me ever since I learned about it in college. Through the multiple photography sessions I have done with my clients, I have grown to understand that choosing the right color for your outfit can transform your image to the ultimate level. And I am sure every bay area family photographer would back me on that.

Playing around with different colors and figuring out which goes well with what has always enthralled me. I have noticed that wearing something from the calm, muted pastel shade always looks well in photographs, especially if you want your portraits to be dreamy. These muted shades can make you look relaxed yet cheerful, and these feelings, when captured, make the portraits look charming. Creating outfits around lighter color palettes also pairs really well if you are aiming to have a couple of soft and romantic portraits with your partner.

Limit the patterns

Patterns are indeed fun, but they can be very overwhelming at times too. Loud colors and bold patterns are big “no-no” for family portraits. They can create distractions and bury the emotions you want to capture in the photographs. However, a few people wearing light patterns might look good in a large group. The pop of patterns in between a large family can create interesting visual imagery.

I am not asking you to avoid patterns altogether. If you want, you can pick outfits with smaller patterns in sober colors that won’t scream for attention. For me, “Less is the new more”. The same goes for accessories and jewelry. I recommend wearing light bracelets, a simple pendant with a chain, or small earrings. The simpler you dress, the more sophisticated your portraits are.

Coordinate Instead of Matching Your Outfits

Matching your outfits with your kids might be fun, but not when you go for a photography session. The whole family wearing the same shirt looks as cheesy as it sounds and makes your family photographs look too confusing. Rather, you can choose outfits in the same color family that do not exactly match but goes well together. For instance, blue goes well with white and beige. Or you can pick rust and corals.

Walking through the woods wearing a flowing gown sounds absurd in real life, isn’t it? But, doing just that can create a mystic impression in your portraits. I recommend my female clients wear a dress. Long and flowy ones always looks good on photos.Choose to Dress Up, ok flattering in portraits. For the men, I recommend wearing a button-down shirt, or a proper suit.

These photographs that you are investing your money and time on will go into your family albums or hang on your living room wall, and I want you to look the best in them. Thus, sometimes it is desirable that you go all out while dressing yourselves, yet pick something that looks sober and sophisticated.

And Finally, Make Sure Your Hair and Makeup are Spot On

A camera can capture even the minute details that you do not usually think of, like your hair and nails. While you get for your photo shoot, ensure your nails are well-trimmed. If you want them painted, choose a light, neutral color. In addition, your makeup in photographs usually appears duller than in real life. If you are not accustomed to doing your own makeup, taking help from a professional would be a wide discussion. If you like to do your own makeup, make sure you apply your makeup a little bolder than usual.

Your photos are meant to be enjoyed for years to come, and I want to help you look and feel your best so you can feel confident in how your photos can turn out. Always be sure to keep your location in mind when choosing your outfit, whether at a studio or in nature.
